Amsterdam 211 with Tajak - An Interview

***** Interview with Tajak *****

Q. When did Tajak start? Tell us about the history…
We started playing together around three years ago from now, some months after we met in the classroom studying audio engineering in Mexico City. The first time we played it was just for fun, we weren’t planing on making a band, but since that first time we found a lot of chemistry between the three of us, so we continued playing and making songs for some months until we realized we were making something good and we needed to name it. After many options of names we decided to call our band “Tajak” which comes from a native Baja California language, Kiliwa, and means Skeleton. The three of us come from the peninsula of Baja California (Coco Badán and Carlos Arias from Ensenada, Alvaro Castro from La Paz) so Tajak is a representation of where we come from.

Q: Who are your influences?
The three of us have a quite similar taste on music, we love Can, Neu!, Bardo Pond, Spacemen 3, The Stooges, Swans, Darkthrone, Bowery Electric, Jesus and Mary Chain and many more…

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Bardo Pond: Amanita
Bowery Electric: Beat
The Stooges: Fun House
Darkthrone: Blaze in the Northern Sky
Jesus and Mary Chain: Psychocandy
Spacemen 3- Sound of confusion
Sunn O)))- Black One

Q. How do you feel playing live?
We think to experience Tajak you need to watch it live, every time we play live we improvise a lot over our songs, sometimes we make new songs or transitions live, and the three of us go into a state of not thinking and just flowing, it always feels fast and sometimes we don’t remember our playing, because we have a show that begins and never stops until the end.

Q. How do you describe Tajak sounds?
Tajak sounds are Harsh, Raw, Liquid, Reverberating, Melting, Surrounding, Loud, Hypnotizing and Ritualistic.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
We always record live, we always try to record each instrument in a different room so we get a clean signal of each one. Sometimes we record vocals through an amp and pedals, so we can get a very dirty sounding, fuzzy voice.

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
We recommend: Los Kowalski, Par Ásito, Sunset Images, Vyctoria, Mr. Saldos, Nada.

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
Can

Q: What are your plans for the future?
We are just on the verge of releasing a cover of Little Doll by The Stooges, and we have two full length albums coming, we have the songs ready but we still have to record.

Q: Any parting words?
We want to tell the world that there is a lot of good emerging music in Mexico, genres like noise, psych, shoegaze, punk, stoner, ambient, that you should take the time to check out.
