Breeder with Movie Brain - An Interview

***** Interview with Movie Brain *****

Q. When did Movie Brain start? Tell us about the history...
Movie Brain began as just a couple of songs that I wrote after working one day. I liked them more than anything else I had done at that point so I decided to make them their own thing. The name came from a typo in a text message I had sent my girlfriend, I was typing "mountain" and my iPhone corrected it to "movie brain" haha, I liked it so much I decided to name the project that. After a few days the response from the community was unbelievable. Everyone really liked what I was doing, so I decided that I would turn Movie Brain into a band and bring in my buddy Kevin to help me out with it.

Q: Who are your influences?
Jonathan: My influences are all over the place, but for this project, all of the English shoegazing bands of the 90's really inspired me. Slowdive in particular. I also take a lot from Joy Division and New Order, stuff like that. I could also say Sonic Youth has been a huge influence on this band as well.

Kevin is a huge fan of Interpol, Trail of Dead and Fog Lake.

Q. Make a list of 5 albuns of all time…
I'm going to list 5 albums but put them in no particular order haha.
1. Slowdive-Souvlaki
2. My Bloody Valentine- Loveless
3. Fog Lake- Virgo Indigo
4. A Tribe Called Quest- The Low End Theory
5. Black Flag- Nervous Breakdown 7"

Q. How do you feel playing live?
Playing live is amazing, movie brain hasn't played a live show yet unfortunately. We are working on that process daily though! All it will take is finding the right people for the job. I'm sure 2016 will be a good year for movie brain in a live setting

Q. How do you describe Movie Brain sounds?
The sounds are very hazy, lush and atmospheric. I try to focus more on texture of the final product rather than the qualities of songwriting. I love drones and repetition, and I feel that's reflected through our songwriting process.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Recording our songs is a pretty minimalistic approach. I have an iPad with GarageBand and an interface that I use amp sims with.

Pretty much everything you hear is onboard GarageBand stuff. It's minimal and by no means impressive but it gets the job done!

Q. Which new bands do you recommend?
Nerve Endings, Navajo Witch, and Frederik Bjørn are some artists that I would recommend out of the Shoegaze and dream pop genre. Some good folk, punk, and doom metal coming from these artists.
As for artists that are in the same vein as Movie Brain I would definitely say Fog Lake, Cigarettes After Sex, Ninth Paradise, Plastic Flowers, Ringo Deathstarr and Violet Cold to name a few!

Q: Which band would you love to made a cover version of?
I think it would be very fitting to do a cover of Cocteau Twins Cherry Coloured Funk.

Q: What are your plans for the future?
Our plans are to keep writing, and recording. To get a live lineup and start playing shows this summer!

Q: Any parting words
I wanna say thank you for having the interest in this project to want to interview us. We appreciate all the kindness we have received concerning this project and we are very excited to keep creating these sounds for everyone to enjoy!
