Silver Rocket with Death of The Author - An Interview

***** Interview with Death of The Author *****

Q. When did Death of the Author start, tell us about the history...
BG: Well all three of us had been making music together for a while before but things really started in early 2014 when we wanted to start something new. We jammed on and off for a few months and asked billy to help out when we started booking shows over the summer. It ended up working really well so we just went on from there.

Q: Who are your influences?
BG: Hard question as we all have a lot of shared influences as well as individually. Direct influences I would have to say lots of 80s/90s indie/alternative; mostly stuff on Creation, SST & Sub Pop records. Then also more modern bands such as Yuck, Ringo Deathstarr, Warpaint, Wolf Alice, Spotlight kid, to name a few.

BD: From a drumming perspective I have to say the biggest ones are Jon Theodore (QOTSA/Mars Volta), Dave Grohl, Deantoni Parks (Bosnian Rainbows), Stella Mozgawa (Warpaint), Phil Selway (Radiohead) & Michael Spearman (Everything Everything). From a musical perspective, the bands that inspire to want to make music in the context of death of the author are artists again like Wolf Alice, Warpaint but then also Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Silversun Pickups, Tame Impala, The Wytches. It would take a long time to list all of them!

Q. Make a list of 5 albums of all time…
BG: Almost impossible but first thoughts in terms of decades:

60s - Velvet underground & Nico - self titled 70s - Neu! - self titled 80s - My Bloody Valentine - Isn’t Anything 90s - Neutral Milk Hotel - in an aeroplane over the sea 2000s - Warpaint - Fool

BD: I can’t really say these are the best albums of all time but here’s a few i’ve been listening to religiously over the past couple of years

Nirvana-In Utero Radiohead-Kid A The Mars Volta-Deloused in the Comatorium Incubus-A Crow Left of the Murder Everything Everything-Arc

BH: Some albums I like at the moment are

Goat - World Music The Smiths - Meat is Murder Brainiac - Hissing Prigs in Static Couture Bosnian Rainbows - Self Titled Grimes - Halfaxa

Q. How do you feel playing live?
BG: I think all three of us would agree playing live is the best part of being in a band and it's something we’re always excited for. Going a little deeper I think that the experience of playing live is one that exposes the inherent tension between the singularity and repetitiousness of experience in general; and it does so more than other experiences. Without being too abstract it is the intensity of that tension, in my opinion, that makes playing live one of the best experiences you can have.

BD: I agree it is definitely the best part of being in a band. When a live show is going really well and you free yourself from self analysis/criticism there can be something almost transcendent about it. Being able to exist entirely in the moment is a rare and beautiful thing and something experience mainly when playing music. It’s also nice to share the chemistry we have with other people. I like to think it’s sort of infectious and that it hopefully draws people in.

Q. How do you describe Death of The Author's sound?
BG: Well hopefully people will go listen for themselves; but from our perspective it's all about tension and contrast. Obviously we are highly influenced by shoegaze and noise rock but for these kinds of sounds to really mean anything we feel they need to put into contact with something different. I mean sometimes shoegaze can get a bit dreamy and droney so you need to mix in some intensity and variety and that's what we try to do. So to go back to the abstract again, it's more about setting up sonic dichotomies in order to play around with the tension between them rather than presenting the two identities separately.

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
BD: We’ve always self-produced and recorded independently. Our first couple of demos didn’t necessarily really turn out how we wanted and we figured the best way to capture the essence of our band was to record live, all in one room together. We always thought we sounded better live than recorded so it just seemed the logical step to go, our old recordings were missing that energy and glue that happens when you play together. Plus there was something really liberating about knowing it was going to be as honest and raw as it could be, there was no time correction or anything like that and minimal editing, if we fucked up we played the song again. After the live take was down we’d then overdub guitars and vocals and that was it. That’s how Violet/Purl was recorded, we also redid our old demos during the same session and they will be out in the very near future. It also helps having a great engineer to work with and recording with people who’s work you respect which is why we always record at a place near us called The Park Studio.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
Westkust, The Wytches, Stargazer Lillies, The History of Apple Pie, Kagoule, The Vyrll Society, Honeyblood and some local bands we really like at the moment are Wyldest, Rickyfitts & Melt Dunes.

Q: Which band would you love to make a cover version of?
BG: Always wanted to do a Dinosaur Jr. classic but we are mainly focused on writing are own stuff.

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Write new songs, play more shows, really just keep on doing what we are doing now and hope people keep interested.

Q: Any parting words?
We’d like to say a huge thank you to all the people that have been listening to the new single and supporting us recently, as well as you guys for having us!
