Head In The Ether with Cochlear Kill - An Interview

***** Interview with Cochlear Kill *****

Q. When did Cochlear Kill starts, tell us about the history...
It started in a bedroom in Brisbane 2009 - I quit my job (at Cochlear funnily enough) and decided to finish ideas that shit jobs had gotten in the way of up till then. Travel, homelessness and interstate migration delayed things but released a 7" single Head In The Ether / Scarlet Sometimes in 2010 then a self titled debut album the following year. People came and went in the band we played some shows round Melbourne but always stayed primarily a recording project.

Q: Who are your influences?
Anything with good melody or rhythm that makes you feel something and even better if it has some ethereal dreamy quality. My Bloody Valentine, Swans, The Cure, Simon & Garfunkel, Nirvana, Beatles, Mogwai, Failure even The Everly Brothers

Q. Made a list of 5 albuns of all time…
Loveless - My Bloody Valentine
Urban Hymns - The Verve
Before the Dawn Heals Us - m83
Ænema - Tool
Sgt Peppers - The Beatles

Q. How do you fell playing live?
Depends on the venue - A nice dark, dingey lit venue helps set the mood otherwise it can feel a bit weird. Oh an usually fairly drunk what can I say The Pogues are an influence as well.

Q. How do you describe Cochlear Kill sounds?
All the different genres that interest me fused with FX pedals into a dreamy/noisy hallucinogenic blur or.....Music on the hallucinogenic side of pop

Q: Tell us about the process of recording the songs ?
Its all home recorded 'cept the real drums which are done in a proper studio. I jump between Logic, Repear and Reason. For the Colour Me Radd EP I got the songs mixed properly for the first time instead of trying to do it all myself. Lindsay Gravina (Rowland S Howard, HTRK, The Birthday Party) and Bryce Moorhead (Violent Soho) mixed different tracks.

Q. Which new bands do you recommended?
I recently discovered Stumbleine and Melody's Echo Chamber.....otherwise I keep discovering older stuff so it aint new but its new to me...Jawbox, The Sounds of Siam, Funkadelic

Q: What´s the plans for future....
Slowly but surely improving the home studio to facilitate creativity not frustrate it - that whilst still churning out new noise!

Q: Any parting words?
Have a good time all the time!*
